i've been tracking the a few of the new online event management services out there:
1. Renkoo
2. MyPunchBowl
3. Skobee
4. Socializr
Just as Yelp is working on eating away at CitySearch, some of these new event services will start getting noticed against Evite. Its a matter of time...

Hey there, you missed Planypus though in all fairness we're not trying to be evite, we're solving the problem evite can't solve, when a group of people wants to do something but need to plan it together rather than having one person come up with all the details.
Oh, btw, skobee is now defunct..see the gigaom post about half a year ago: http://gigaom.com/2006/08/25/from-best-in-show-to-side-project-in-six-months/
Skobee is dead and was dead for a while now. Renkoo, has a great team behind it, but they chose the wrong technology to use. Socializr is trying to become a social network and is not impressive at all. The best chance out of the sites you mentioned in Mypunchbowl, which actualy (gasp) has a business model and good business relationships. However, all of your mentioned sites missed the ball a bit. They are all trying to be a prettier Evite. The problem is not in the UI but in the approach. We plan activities together for the most part and even the most standardized activity has a degree of collaboration between the inviter and the invitees. That is the problem that Planypus solves. Planypus focuses on the group and on true dialogue between the organizer(s) and the invitees. Everyone is able to suggest times and places and vote on them, everyone is able to use Planypus without ever signing up!
The long answer to your question is: Planypus has the best chance to be the next Evite
thanks for the shoutout on planypus. will definitely check out. still alot of inefficiencies across the grandfather concepts - online travel, local guides, classifieds, etc. i'd love to talk to more of these companies such as planypus that have a unique approach to the market.
Jai,
If you'd like to speak to Alex or myself we'd be happy to chat with you about your ideas on how the space could be improved. If you'd like, drop us a line at yan AT planyp.us or alex AT planyp.us and one of us will definitely answer you right away, thanks!
